Health Room

Welcome to the Health Room at Ridge View. It is staffed by Mrs. Cheramy Reid, the Health Room Assistant, and Mrs. Judy Niles, R.N., B.S.N., the District Nurse.

Mrs. Reid provides first aid, care and comfort to students with illness or injury. She administers medications to students as stipulated by district policies, maintains Health Room records, and refers current or potential health problems to the District Nurse. She communicates with parents frequently and as needed for any problems with their child/children.

Mrs. Niles provides assessment, treatment, and disposition for students and staff with illness or injury. She also performs health screenings, monitors immunizations, medications, communicable diseases, special needs/chronic health conditions, and implements the District Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Plan. She is the coordinator for the Ridge View Medical Emergency Response Team and is a trainer for CPR/AED for school personnel. She provides training and guidance to health room assistant and other involved personnel, counsels with students, families, and staff relating to health issues and makes home visits when helpful. The District Nurse assists staff, administration, and families in the assessment of student health needs.

  Guidelines for Sending Students Home  

Below are listed guidelines that have been established by District Health Services, for notifying parents to take their children home:

    • Any condition listed in the DHEC School Exclusion List (link provided on District Web Page).
    • Fever of 100 degrees or greater with other symptoms which may be indicators of impending illness, such as malaise, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, upper respiratory infection, and/or known exposure to communicable illnesses.
    • Fever of 101 degrees with or without other symptoms.
    • Nausea and/or vomiting.
    • Excessive coughing, wheezing or asthma-like symptoms.
    • Diarrhea, severe stomach cramps.
    • Head lice.
    • Communicable diseases.
    • Open, draining sores.
    • Severe headache.
    • Severe sore throat.
    • Seizures.
    • Accidents that require further evaluation and treatment.
    • Rash; unexplained, especially with fever.
    • Suspected conjunctivitis.

General Medication Information:

If a student is required to take medication at school, the medication will be given in accordance with district policy.

      • All medication must be brought to the Health Room upon arrival at school.
      • All medication must have a "Medication Permission Form" completed and signed by the parent. If sending a prescription medication, the "Medication Permission Form" must also be signed by the Physician .
      • Medication must be brought in an UPDATED, PROPERLY LABELED, CORRECT CONTAINER, WITH CHILD'S NAME ON IT.
      • Medication sent in ziplock bags, aluminum foil, etc. will NOT be given.
      • Health Room personnel will document the time and dosage of medication when received.
      • Parent/guardian should inform Health Room personnel whenever the dosage changes or medication is discontinued.
      • Narcotics and substances containing aspirin will NOT be administered in the Health Room.
      • Non-traditional herbal and food substances will not be routinely administered unless a written prescription by a personal MD or dentist has been obtained.
      • All medication must be picked up at the end of the school year, to prevent discarding.

Special considerations for controlled substance medications (i.e. Ritalin, Dexedrine, Concerta, Adderall):

      • Parents are to bring controlled substance medication into the Health Room and give it directly to Health Room personnel.
      • Health Room personnel WILL NOT send controlled substance medication home with a student.
      • All controlled substance medication will be counted when received in the Health Room and audited on a regular basis.
      • Prescription bottle labels must be up to date and no older than two months.
      • Any change in dosage must be authorized by physician. Faxed order, new prescription or newly labeled bottles will be accepted.
